Streamline Site

Hi Jon - it might just be me an my crappy pc but i seem to time out a bit when coming to this site.

I think my pc struggles to cope with the amount of content there is on this site which is an incredible achievement but i do find it information overload an overpowering for me and my pc to handle lol

Is there anyway i can improve this without getting a new pc? and dont say yea dont come back hehe

Not aiming to moan or criticise, just struggle and end up having to keep closing / refreshing / waiting for ages for pages to load

Cheers

Carl

Re: Streamline Site

Hi Carl, wont be your PC will be the site, what browser are you using ? I do test other browsers but only now and again I mainly use Chrome but the site should work on all.

The site uses a lot of Cache some browsers seem to use cache better than others - what should happen is the bulk of the content like on the front page would get stored in cache on your PC on first visit then just update when new content is updated so first load would be slow but then re-visits it would be better.

Is it mainly the main home page your getting timeouts on ?

I will do a tidy up on main home page their is a lot of graphics on their

I have not had any other reports of timeouts, if you let us know what browser your on I will do sme testing on it

Re: Streamline Site

Hi mate its IE 8 i use Win XP. Intel P4 3Ghz Socket 478 (2003), 2Gig Ram ddr333 - i do have chrome setup when you asked me to try it out a while back but i tend to stick by IE - Also i tend to delete temp files / temp internet files after few days to remove any possible virus / malware / infections on to my pc so that could be where im going wrong.

A good example now - not deleted any temp files at the mo - been on here last night an now an when i click any button - eg post reply, login, go to different webpage i find my pc has to think about it a lot lol like it has an attitude of do i really have to? hehe

The main home page does take a while but as you say it does get a little quicker after being on it once.

Any ideas be appreciated.

Thanks

Carl

Re: Streamline Site

Yeh PC spec is very good miles better than mine for the memory - If you doubled that to 4gb you would see a big difference in performance for your whole PC across all applications. But I my self only have 2gb and XP but lower spec CPU so it should be fine

But the AAAA site is slow in general - its running on Dedi3 so I give priority on performance to the hosted game servers and I have tested Ie8 but will do some more tests with it.

Having said that on Chrome I am not getting timeouts and load times are not to bad. I am not anti Microsoft but IE8 and the other IE versions are the worst performance wise for browsers.

So coupled with the fact the AAAA site is slow and IE8 you are getting the worst of both lol. If you dont like Chrome try one of the others like Firefox or Opera.

The AAAA site runs on Drupal 6 and is very resource hungry so when I first started is was fast but with all the add ons its gone sluggish - I want to move to Drupal 7 but the upgrade path from 6 to 7 is a nightmare so I keep putting it off - The current theme wont run on 7 and a lot of the modules we use also dont run so I would have to find replacements.............

Now I know their are some performance problems I will do some tidying up and try to reduce some of the modules and graphics - but if I was you I would use another browser not just because of AAAA but you should find better load times for other sites that I have not butchered together lol )))

Happy shooting - Kill em ALL and kill em again

Re: Streamline Site

Hello Karl. I quite agree and understand your dilemma. If it wasn't for the scintillating content of the AAAA website and the wonderful presentation, also the day-to-day updating regarding Mohaa aspects I don't think I could bear the waiting time needed to flick through the pages. Although I must agree Heatsink has done a wonderful job on the site presentation with his outstanding knowledge and I.T credentials. I remember one time Karl, when he was working as I.T for British Airways, he sent all the planes bound for New York to Madrid, But since I threatened to go around to his house and wrap the website around his neck, he has made considerable improvements.

I got over the problem of waiting by clicking the website icon and then taking a shower, doing my shopping and cooking an evening meal. After eating, I would visit the toilet with the morning paper after reading the headlines !!!!Behold!!!! Looking through the toilet door I see the shout box on the screen. The toilet is now called the shout box.
You may find Firefox is faster,I did. it does not carry so much junk as most browsers.

Re: Streamline Site

LMAO thank you Nobby

I have started a poll just to see how all find the site performance -:
http://www.mohaaaa.co.uk/AAAAMOHAA/content/aaaa-website-performance-0

It has become a bit sluggish so done some minor tweaks today but dont expect them to improve it much - have took some stuff off front page but asked a few on TS and in general most said it was slow sometimes but ok - so need to get more feed back, not much I can do server side as Game servers take priority but if it is a major issue then I will look at what else I can do but from testing its stable just bow and again slow but worst I have seen is a 6 second load on a reply to a post...............

Please all do feed back because if its a major issue I will look more deeply at this but at present I am trying to work oit why Battleaxe is having so much problems but I am thinking thats because he clear's his cache regular but just guessing so the more feed back the more I can work out whats going on

Re: Streamline Site

Thanks Jon for the update regarding my situation.

I would love to have 4gig ram - my motherboard ABIT IS7 does support 4gb but when i was missing with it last summer after it all went .... up, the guy at pc world eventually had to sort it out for me as xp needs a floppy disk drive to install, eventually got it working but he even couldnt get it higher than 3gb as xp doesnt recognise 4gb and xp wont run any higher than 3gb as it doesnt recognise anything higher than 3gb apparently. So ended up with dilemna of 2gb (x4 sticks of 512mb) that runs with hyper thread tech or 3 (1gb) and i lose the hyper thread tech as not all slots are used and if i have 2 x1 1gb an 2 x512mb it didnt like that either as different sticks. After crashing with 3gb a lot i downsized to 2gb and its now stable.

I went to post last night an after i finished posting this all my text went funny on this site - eg - began to flash on an off an when i went to shutdown my windows xp was saying logging off an saving settings but the background had gone black which has never happened. I restarted pc an all was well again so have no clue what happened but had no problem until tried to post on here hehe - maybe its a sign?? Smile

If you can fix this that would be amazing but then again might be easier in the long term to get a new pc.

And Nobby - lol cracking post - ill include in mine that i end up going to bed an coming back after work to still see the home page still loading hehe.

Cheers

Re: Streamline Site

Ok m8 - with ref to your Memory it should be fine on 2gb as I myself only have 2gb but PC world told you a load of duff ))

XP is capable of 4GB http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366778(v=vs.85).aspx#physical_memory_limits_windows_xp

Also XP does not need a floppy drive it is normally installed via CD and DVD - in fact the last Windows OS on a floppy was windows 3 ))

your Mother board does support 4GB -: 4 184-pin DIMM sockets
Maximum of 4GB of DDR400/333/266 SDRAM
http://techreport.com/articles.x/5378/1

Most problems on memory problems is mixing makes and types so for your case I would be surprised if your MOBO cant support 2 sticks of 2GB from what I read in your post it was mixed so the memory speeds and spec were incorrect.................

From also what I read on the errors your getting and saying is defo not AAAA site problem something not stable on your PC.........

what I will say is IE + AAAA site may stress your PC a bit but its a setup / config / hardware problem causing those sort of issues I would have thought............

Try running this http://www.belarc-advisor.org/?gclid=CK-pk5Xn-bACFTMhtAodQmXnmw

This will performance test your PC so it will put some load on your PC memory and graphics - just see if it runs ok............

Also the memory you got in your PC at present are they both the same make and spec ?

If you paid for any of that advise from PC world I would ask for a refund and going by what he has told you if he built it then no wonder its not running ok )))))

Also if you read the write up on your board http://techreport.com/articles.x/5378/1 I would bet one of the settings is pushing the memory to its limits and possible wrongly configured and or wrong spec memory........ If the same guy fitted that memory I would defo check the spec of the memory against the settings in the bios to ensure they match up and that the correct spec memory has been installed -:

Maximum of 4GB of DDR400/333/266 SDRAM

Re: Streamline Site

Here are print screens of my current memory.

I originally built this pc but after the pc began to overheat last summer due to not cleaning it and the heatsink being full of dust i tried to clean it only to damage the mobo and over greased the cpu in thermal causing the board to short out.

However i managed to get a replica board and using sticks i have bought. I have noticed though that the pc wont start unless it has at least 1 512mb when i was faffing round to get 4gb to work on this machine and then i was told by the experts that a - 4gb aint supported on xp, b - not supported on x32 bit pc.

If you could assist in ram that you think would deffo make my pc perform better id be very appreciative.

Cheers

Carl
